You want to get treatment for your varicose and spider veins, but you’re worried about an invasive procedure. Enter sclerotherapy. It’s a minimally invasive treatment that helps the appearance of varicose and spider veins, as well as the symptoms that come with them. Dr. Sukir Sinnathamby of Varicose to Perfect discusses why he relies on sclerotherapy in Cincinnati, OH.
What is Sclerotherapy?
Sclerotherapy is a treatment for varicose and spider veins that can be done easily in the office. It’s minimally invasive, so you don’t have to worry about being put under or anything extreme.
This treatment uses an injection that goes directly into those problem veins. It contains what’s called a sclerosing agent. This causes irritation and the veins respond by collapsing, causing them to fade more from view.
Before this procedure, you’ll have a thorough cosmetic screening to determine if sclerotherapy will be a successful treatment for you. If during this screening, an underlying medical problem is discovered, we may wait to do the treatment. We also prefer to wait if you’re pregnant and we advise you to stop smoking before the procedure, as smoking is proven to increase the time it takes for you to heal.
How Successful is Sclerotherapy?
Sclerotherapy is known as the gold standard for both spider vein removal and treating varicose veins. In 95% of cases, the appearance of the veins is completely eliminated. However, if you’re unhappy with the treatment, please tell a member of our team. We’re committed to making sure you get the results you want.
For many people, results will be seen, particularly in the individual vein, right away. It can take up to 2-6 treatments to successfully remove all of the symptoms, though. It all depends on the severity of your case and how you respond to the treatment. Each session takes about 15-20 minutes.
Side Effects and Aftercare
As with any procedure, there are side effects. Bruising around the injection site is common for days or weeks. You’ll probably also have a firm area or lump beneath the skin around the injection site. It could be tender to the touch, but may not be. This can be treated simply with anti-inflammatory medication.
Our aftercare procedure is designed to minimize the time that you have to deal with these common side effects. We require you to wear medical support hose for three weeks after this injection. The compression these provide help to lessen the chance of you experiencing harsh side effects or having them for long periods of time.
